What Is Venetian Plaster?
Venetian plaster is not paint
True Venetian plaster (stucco veneziano) is a lime-based finish applied in thin layers and burnished to a polished, stone-like surface. Unlike acrylic "venetian" products sold at paint stores, artisan lime plaster breathes, ages gracefully, and develops depth that flat paint cannot replicate.
Where it belongs in luxury interiors
Designers specify Venetian plaster for feature walls, powder rooms, wine cellars, and hospitality lobbies where tactile quality matters. Wet-area applications require proper substrate prep and sealer systems — not every artisan works in showers, so vet experience by room type.
How to evaluate an artisan
Request sample boards in your actual lighting. Ask whether they use authentic lime plasters vs. synthetic systems. Review installed work (not only close-up photos) to judge consistency across large planes and corners.
Budget context
Artisan-grade feature walls typically start around $15–$40 per square foot installed, with full rooms and commercial spaces scaling higher. The investment reflects material cost, skilled labor, and multiple burnishing passes.
